Professor Chioma Nwakanma obtained her PhD in Animal and Environmental Biology from the University of Port – Harcourt, Nigeria in 2012. She is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Management & Toxicology and has served as Deputy Dean of the College of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (2017 – 2022). Her broad research interest is in the development, application, and validation of methods to assess the effects of contaminants, degraded water quality, soil quality, air quality and other environmental stressors on aquatic organisms and human health. She has attended several professional trainings with Diploma Certificates in Water Research and Development – University of Oregon, USA/Elsevier Foundation; Social and Environmental Epidemiology- Masaryk University, Czech Republic; GIS and Remote Sensing for the Water Sector – University of Twente/UNESCO-IHE, Netherlands; Environmental Monitoring and Modelling – UNESCO-IHE, Netherlands; Policy and Diplomacy for Scientists: Responsible Research Practices – University of Trieste/ICTP, Italy; Higher Education Learning & Action Research Outreach – Wageningen University & Research, Netherlands; Climate Change Adaptation & Natural Resources Management – ICRA/Makerere University, Uganda; Environmental Management and Social Safeguard – ARC/WAAPP/MOUAU, Nigeria and Health Safety Environmental (HSE) Competency courses (Level 1, 2 & 3) and Environmental Waste Management through Nigerian Institute of Safety Professionals (NISP), Shell Petroleum Company Development (SPDC). She is a member of several professional bodies among which she is serving in various positions: Nigerian Environmental Society (NES); Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN); Graduate Women in Science, USA (GWIS); Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD); Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON); Association for Environmental Impact Assessment of Nigeria (AEIA), Society of Toxicology (SOT), USA; Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and World Association of Academic Doctors International (WAAD). She has more than 75 publications in reputable proceedings and peer reviewed journals and has attended both local and international conferences and workshops where she presented scientific papers and co-chaired plenary sessions. She is an Editorial Board member of MOUAU Journals, Journal of Ecography and Ecosystem, Journal of Next Generation Application and Sequencing and Open Journal of Nigeria. She teaches and supervises postgraduate and undergraduate students. She is happily married with children
