I have a burning aspiration for opportunities to share and disseminate the enormous ecological and biodiversity conservation knowledge and experiences which I have acquired over many years of very active teaching and research in educational institutions, and environmental conservation intervention activities with both government and non-governmental agencies. I possess a sound erudition that derives from excellent field research experiences, as well as a sound health and good interpersonal skills that endow me with the ability to make a success of this aspiration for veritable environmental stewardship.

1992: Became a “Rockefeller Fellow” by winning the Rockefeller Foundation‟s African Dissertations Internship Award, with a grant to conduct research on the Ecology and Integrated Vertebrate Pest Damage Management (IVPDM) in a Nigerian Sahelian wetland.

6.KEY RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL/ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCES

i) My professional field research experiences began in 1979 when I assisted the Wildlife Officer at Yankari Game Reserve with wildlife species censuses in that reserve. In 1987, I worked with a team of biologists commissioned by then International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP, now BirdLife International) to conduct the Kagoro Forest Conservation Study, in the southern part of Kaduna State, Nigeria. To date, the output from that research effort remains an authoritative publication on the biodiversity of the forests of that area.
ii) In 1996 under the auspices of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), I was commissioned by the UK-based Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and BirdLife International (two leading environmental NGOs with global outreach), to coordinate a nationwide survey of biodiversity hotspots in Nigeria, as part of the worldwide Important Bird Areas (IBA) Programme. The IBA programme is BirdLife International‟s global biodiversity conservation initiative, which uses birds as a common index for identifying sites that are crucial to the long term maintenance of total biodiversity at national, continental, and global levels. My major literary output from that biodiversity conservation programme was the publication of Nigeria‟s chapter in the Africa IBA directory (Important Bird Areas in Africa and Associated Islands: Priority Sites for Conservation). That African IBA directory was hailed by Her Majesty Queen Nor of Jordan (the Honorary President of BirdLife International) as making “…an outstanding contribution to the sustainability of human use of natural resources throughout the (African) continent”.
I also produced as another output of IBA programme, a national directory of Nigeria‟s biodiversity hotspots titled “Critical Sites for Biodiversity Conservation in Nigeria”. In a foreword to the book, the then Federal Minister of Environment assured that parts of the publication will be used “… to shape our National Biodiversity Action Plan …”; and he hoped that “… it will be used by all stakeholders in the Nigerian environment to work toward the protection and wise use of our biodiversity”. The Minister‟s hopes are being actualized, as under the supervision of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), biodiversity conservation initiatives are currently being planned or undertaken in some of the sites that were identified and designated as IBAs during the national exercise which I coordinated. One of the locations I identified as a biodiversity hotspot was chosen as the site where, the A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI) of the University of Jos was established in 2003. The Institute offers training in Conservation Biology to young scientists from the West African sub-region. I played a pivotal role in the planning and establishment of APLORI and its M.Sc. Conservation Biology curriculum.
iii) In addition to leading or being a member of several biodiversity field expeditions and surveys organized under the auspices of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), I was one of the Lead Consultants of a Lagos based environmental consulting firm (Environ Consult Ltd) which undertook the Global Environmental Facility (GEF)-sponsored research, and preparation of the Participatory Management Plans for three biodiversity hotspots (Yankari Game Reserve, Lame Bura Game Reserve, and Malla-Dumba Lake and Forest Reserve) in Bauchi State. This was under the auspices of the National Parks Service of Nigeria. I was the Lead Consultant (Ornithology) of the Niger Delta Wetlands Center; the NGO that handled the biodiversity survey of Brass Island for an Environmental Impact Assessment update, regarding the ongoing Brass Liquefied Natural Gas (BrassLNG) Project.
iv) During my 2001/2002 sabbatical leave at the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), I was seconded by the NCF to the University of Jos to coordinate and drive the processes for establishing the then proposed A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI). My job included the development of a course structure and curriculum for the proposed institute‟s M.Sc. Conservation Biology Programme. I successfully executed the assignment, and went back seven years later to serve as the institute‟s Acting Director during a subsequent sabbatical leave at University of Jos in 2009.
v) During the period November 2004 to November 2008, I was Head of Department of Biological Sciences at Ahmadu Bello University. I thus was at the hem of affairs in that humongous science department which runs three undergraduate and nine postgraduate degree programmes.

The IBA programme is a global environmental conservation initiative initiated and organized by the UK-based BirdLife International. Community Services and Technical Assistance
1989-1998: Served as a Member of the Advisory Committee of the Hadejia-Nguru Wetlands Conservation Project; an international environmental conservation programme that ht to established programmes to achieve sustainable utilization of the resources of that Sahelian wetland.

1990: I was a resource person for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) London, Natural History Unit during the filming of Rosy Bee-eaters (Merops malimbicus) in the lower Kaduna River. My contributions were duly acknowledged in Serial 6 of legendary Sir David Attenborough’s BBC wildlife film series “Trials of Life”, in which segments of scenes of ornithological activities shot at the bee-eater colony were featured.
1991: Appointed Chief Examiner in Biology for the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examinations administered nationwide by Ahmadu Bello University.
1995-1998: Appointed as National Coordinator of the Important Bird Areas (IBA) in Nigeria Programme. The IBA is a worldwide biodiversity conservation initiative which uses birds as a currency for identifying sites of global biodiversity significance.
1998 and 2003: Invited as an Expert Participant to the National Seminars/Workshops on Nigeria’s Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan at Lokoja, Kogi State.
1998: Appointed Member of the Steering Committee of the West Africa programme of Wetlands International (an international NGO), and the (Nigerian) National Coordinator of the African Waterfowl Count (AfWC) of Wetlands International.
2001: Under the auspices of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) where I was on sabbatical leave, I played a pivotal role in the establishment of the A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI), Jos. APLORI is administered by the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Jos, and runs a world class MSc programme in Conservation Biology. I currently participate on part-time basis in the institute‟s management and academic programmes.
