Dr A. Uka is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management. He has a special interest in fish reproductive biology, breeding and genetic improvement. After his Bachelor Science degree in Zoology at University of Port Harcourt in 1990 and National Youth Service Corps under Katsina State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KTARDA) in 1991; he secured employment in Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research in 1994 where he worked and rose from Research Officer II to Principal Research Officer in 2003. in 1998, he successfully completed his Master of Science (MSc.) degree in Aquaculture at Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt and in 2012 he obtained Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Fisheries and Hydrobiology in University of Port Harcourt. During his Doctoral Research, he worked on Hatchery Propagation and Assessment of Genetic parameters for future selection of growth enhancement traits in Tilapia guineensis. He was further trained on the principle of genetics and Tilapia breeding at the Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research in Abassa Egypt. He has held several leadership positions including Head of Fish Breeding and Genetic Improvement in African Regional Aquaculture Center, Aluu Port Harcourt; Head of Brackish Water Aquaculture Station of Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, Buguma and Head of Fin and Shellfish Breeding Section of Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, Buguma. He has over fifteen years Research and Teaching experience and has supervised myriads of students at undergraduate and graduate levels. His service was transferred to the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in 2013 where he is presently serving as a Senior Lecturer and the Acting Head of Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management. He is currently involved in the investigative research on hatchery propagation and genetic selection of growth enhancement trait in Cichlid and Cyprinid species of African origin. He is a member of Fishery Society of Nigeria, Aquatic Science Society of Nigeria and Biotechnology Society of Nigeria.
